PORTALEGRE DISTRICT - VILLAGES, CITIES AND INTERESTING PLACES
The District of Portalegre belongs entirely to the sub-region and Intermunicipal Community of Alto Alentejo. It borders on the north with the district of Castelo Branco, on the east with Spain, on the south with the district of Évora, and the west with the district of Santarém. It has an area of 6 065 km² (6th largest Portuguese district) and a resident population of 118 506 inhabitants (2012). The district seat is the homonymous city.
In the current main division of the country, the district is integrated into the Alentejo Region and all municipalities belong to the Alto Alentejo sub-region. They form CIMAA - Intermunicipal Community of Alto Alentejo.
The main urban centers are the cities of Elvas (17,625 inhabitants), Portalegre (15,300 inhabitants), Ponte de Sor (7,700 inhabitants), and the village of Campo Maior (7,300 inhabitants).
