GUARDA DISTRICT - VILLAGES, CITIES AND INTERESTING PLACES

The district of Guarda is one of the eighteen districts that, together with Madeira and Azores, makeup Portugal. With its capital in the homonymous city, it limits to the north with Braganza, to the east with Spain, to the south with Castelo Branco and to the west with Coimbra and the district of Viseu.

It belongs to the traditional province of Beira Alta, except for the council of Foz Coa, further north, which belongs to Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro. Area: 5535.32 km² (7th largest Portuguese district). Resident population (2011): 160 939 habs. Population density: 20.07 inhabitants / km².
They have the category of city and municipality headquarters: Gouveia, Guarda, Mêda, Pinhel, Sabugal, Seia, Trancoso and Vila Nova de Foz Côa. The others are vilas, the seat of the municipality. Other important vilas: Vilar Formoso (in the municipality of Almeida), Vila Franca das Naves (Trancoso), São Romão and Santa Marinha (Seia), Souto (Sabugal) and Vila Nova de Tazém (Gouveia).
